University Pathway Germany

Frequently asked Questions

Can I work during my language course at GLS in Berlin and later at university?

Yes! If you are in Germany on a study preparatory visa (Studienvorbereitendes Visum), you are allowed to work up to 20 hours per week, or 140 full days / 280 half days per year - and that includes the time during your language course at GLS in Berlin.

You're also entitled to Germany’s minimum wage, even if your German is basic or you're doing simple jobs (read more). Working part-time is a great way for international students to improve their German language skills through real-life practice.

I’m only 17 – can I still join the University Pathway Germany Program?

Yes! If you’ve completed high school, you’re eligible to join the University Pathway Germany Program, even if you’re under 18.

There may be some additional requirements, such as parental consent or restrictions on working hours, but don’t worry - GLS Berlin will guide you through every step to make sure everything runs smoothly.

How much does it cost to study at a university in Germany?

Studying at public universities in Germany is tuition-free - for both German and international students. The only cost is a small semester contribution, usually between €100 and €300, depending on the university. This fee typically covers administrative costs and includes a public transportation ticket.

The only exceptions are universities in the state of Baden-Württemberg (one of Germany’s 16 federal states), which charge tuition fees of €1,500+ per semester.

What about living costs in Germany?

  • In smaller or mid-sized German cities, students can usually live comfortably on €800 to €1,000 per month - especially if they share an apartment rather than renting one on their own.
  • In more expensive cities like Munich, Hamburg, Berlin, or Frankfurt, expect €1,200 to €1,500 depending on accommodation and lifestyle choices: more info

Can I study art or music in Germany?

Yes. With GLS Berlin’s Uni Pathway Germany program, you can prepare your application to study art or music at German universities and colleges.

What are the requirements to study art or music in Germany?

Besides a high school diploma, you must demonstrate talent through a portfolio or an audition. German art and music universities admit students based on aptitude, not just grades.

Do I need a portfolio to apply for art or music studies?

Yes. A portfolio or audition is required. Most applicants create their work samples while attending the German language course at GLS in Berlin, which helps them prepare effectively.

Can GLS Berlin help me build my portfolio?

Yes. While GLS doesn’t cover the costs, we’ll gladly connect you with affordable prep courses at private art schools in Berlin that help you create a portfolio for art school or university applications.

Do I need to speak German for art or music studies in Germany?

Yes. Most German-taught programs require B2 or C1 German.

  • Talent-based programs (fine arts, design, performance, music) may accept students with B1–B2 German, since admission is based mainly on your portfolio, audition, or entrance exam.
  • Music academies (Musikhochschulen) usually ask for at least B2 German, especially for music theory. For performance-focused programs (instrumental or vocal), some schools allow entry with B1 German if your artistic skills are exceptional — but you’ll normally need to reach B2 or C1 during your studies.

How does GLS Berlin support my application?

We take care of the formal application process for up to three art or music universities in Germany. However, you must submit your portfolio yourself, and some schools require in-person submission.

How much do I pay for the University Pathway Germany Program?

The cost depends on your current German level and whether you need a short 10-week course or a longer 10-month course. You pay for the German language course plus a service fee, which covers the handling of your university application.

Please see the price table here (scroll down a bit).

When do I have to pay?

You pay when you receive the invoice.

  • If you don’t need a visa, you pay the full amount at once.
  • If you do need a visa, you’ll start with a down payment that covers the VPD or Conditional Letter of Acceptance to a German university. Once the full payment is received, you’ll get your invitation to the German course - and only then can you apply for your visa at the embassy.
