The Good & the Bad - what did you like best? What least?

My GLS experience has been excellent. In 24 weeks of standard instruction, spread over 9 months I have gone from a complete beginner in German (A0) to starting level B2, with the ability to converse and a strong foundation in grammar and vocabulary to build on. I’ve really really enjoyed my time at GLS too. Some of the aspects of the school experience that have been most important to me are:

1) Good teachers - and some outstanding. Most instructors at GLS are career teachers who have great passion and skill as language instructors. I have had about ten different teachers at GLS over 9 months, as I’ve taken several breaks and rejoined different classes. Several of my teachers have been excellent, and being in a class with them has accelerated my learning. When I’ve had a teacher who I haven’t responded as much to, the GLS academic team has been very eager to take feedback and move me into another teacher’s class.

2) Super accommodating administration - most important to me has been the option offered by GLS to pause courses and restart courses whenever I need with one week's notice.

3) Programs - the after-class programs offer a variety of experiences and are led by awesome people from the GLS staff. There is a program on offer every day of the week at very affordable prices - many are free. The opportunity to join programs has been a fun way to get additional practice with German, meet more students and explore the city and country. The fact that GLS offers these programs is an incredible added value to the price of enrollment.

4) Facilities - it makes a big difference to be learning in bright, spacious, clean, well-equipped classrooms with views of sky and green space. In addition to super modern and comfortable classrooms, the GLS campus has a nice cafeteria, library, outdoor space, computer lab and many areas to sit and study. Students also have access to some of the adjoining hotel facilities. The location in Prenzlauerberg is a lovely setting with many amenities and it is easy to get to on transit from most areas of the city.

5) Students - the student body is a mix of people of all ages and from all over the world. Some are enrolled for job/career purposes, some as a hobby or as part of a travel experience, some because they are newly residents of Germany, some because they have a partner who speaks German. It’s a wide range, which makes the classes more interesting that some schools where everyone is enrolled because of their business or because they are an exchange student. I’ve learned a lot from my fellow students and made many friends from around the world during my time at GLS.

6) Value. GLS costs more than a lot of the schools that have recently started in Berlin, but for the price you get a top rate institution with career teachers and modern facilities - great value compared with equivalent top programs like the Goethe Institut which costs more than double.

I’d recommend GLS to anyone interested in learning or improving their German.

Your recommendations for other students

My experience has been that what people get out of the GLS course is highly dependent on what they put in during and after class. If you are intent on actually being able to use the language, it is important to spend time outside of class doing course book tasks, reviewing lessons, drilling yourself in vocabulary and grammar and practicing speaking and listening with conversation partners.
