Late Application Fees (Less than 6 months before arrival):
- €900 for a full school year
- €500 for a semester
Payment Schedule:
- 20% due within 10 days after receiving the invoice
- 50% due 4 months before arrival
- 30% due 2 months before arrival

As escolas: "Gymnasien"
O que é um "Gymnasium" (Ginásio)?
Colocamos estudantes internacionais no Gymnasien. Um ginásio é uma escola secundária que leva à universidade. O currículo é bastante acadêmico, com duas línguas estrangeiras mais cursos de matemática e ciências. Ca. 30% dos estudantes alemães frequentam este tipo de ensino médio (mais sobre Gymnasien e o sistema escolar na Alemanha)
Abitur
O exame final é chamado Abitur e concede acesso a estudos universitários. As escolhas da localização universitária e dos campos de estudo são limitadas no entanto: apenas estudantes com um muito bom Abitur podem estudar onde e o que querem. Por favor, note: estudantes de intercâmbio que planejam fazer o Abitur têm que frequentar uma escola particular, o Abitur não é possível para eles nas escolas estaduais.

O ano escolar na Alemanha
O ano escolar começa em AUG / SEP, os feriados variam de estado para estado (6 semanas no verão mais 2 semanas cada, no outono, no Natal e em torno da Páscoa). Os dias escolares são MON - FRI, geralmente 8:00 da manhã - 1 ou 2 da tarde, o que deixa tempo suficiente para se juntar a clubes locais focados em esportes ou as artes à tarde ou nos fins de semana.

How GLS Finds Host Families
At GLS Berlin, we carefully select and screen every host family to make sure students feel safe, welcome, and at home in Germany. Our process includes:
- Personal interviews: Families are personally interviewed by GLS staff to learn about their lifestyle, values, and motivation to host.
- Home visits: We inspect the house or apartment to ensure it meets our standards for comfort and safety.
- Ongoing support: Host families receive guidance from GLS and can reach out at any time. Students also have a GLS contact person throughout their stay.
- Cultural exchange focus: Many host families have children who join exchange programs themselves, so they understand the importance of intercultural learning.
This way, you can be sure that your host family in Germany will not only provide room and board but also give you an authentic cultural experience and a warm welcome into everyday German life.

How You Live with a Host Family
Most students will have their own private room. In rare cases, and only after consultation, you may share a room with a host sibling or another exchange student. Common areas such as the living room, kitchen, and bathroom are shared with the family.
Your host family in provides full board:
- Monday to Friday: breakfast, packed lunch, and evening meal
- Saturday and Sunday: breakfast, lunch, and dinner
Meals are prepared by the host family just as they would cook for themselves, giving you an authentic taste of daily German life.

The GLS High School team in Berlin
The GLS high school team in Berlin is your first point of contact in Germany. You’ll meet them during the Berlin weekends, and if you attend high school in Berlin, you can reach out anytime for guidance or support.
The team also organizes regular activities for exchange students, such as weekend trips to Prague or Hamburg—a fun way to meet other international students and explore new cities in Germany.

Local coordinators in other cities
If you study outside Berlin - say in Hamburg or Nürnberg - a local coordinator will support you throughout your stay. Living in the same city, they stay in touch via email, phone, and personal meetings to help with any questions or problems.
Local coordinators also organize fun activities for exchange students, such as bowling, Christmas market meetups, or day trips to nearby cities. They can also assist if you want to join a sports club, take music lessons, or try new hobbies like horseback riding.
